Imbolc is also known as Brigid's Day. She is the goddess of hearth and flame, arts and crafts, and of bards, smiths, and physicians.

Mothers tend to hang Brigid's Cross (seen as the background on this page) made from the Rowan tree over the cradels of their babies and recite a charm/prayer/spell to invoke the goddess' protection.

Bonfires and candles are lit this day to represent the goddess. Some place lit candles in every window on the eve of Imbolc and let them burn til sun rise of the day of Imbolc. Another custom is making Bridgid's Cross from straw. If you view the Wheel of the Year, Imbolc is directly opposite to Lughnasadh. Brigid is Lugh's opposite.
